If you just started vaping, you might be trying to find the best e-liquid. In our view, it is much more important that you discover which e liquid works best for you! With so many options to choose from, we would love to help. The most important features of an e-liquid are: flavour, PG/VG ratio, nicotine strength and safety. The kind of e-cigarette or tank you use is also important.

E-liquids and PG/VG ratio
E-liquid mostly consists of Propylene Glycol (PG) and Vegetable Glycerin (VG). Propylene Glycol works as a flavour carrier and contributes to the throat-hit triggered by nicotine (if present). Glycerine is responsible for the amount and thickness of the vapour.
New vapers tend to vape e-liquids with a higher concentration of PG. Since e-liquids with more VG tend to be gentler on the throat, it is quite common for vapers to switch to High VG e-liquids at a later stage.
The mix between PG and VG is expressed as a ratio. For instance, 50PG/50VG is short for 50% Propylene Glycol and 50% Vegetable Glycerin. It is important for you to find your ideal mix. We can help by offering the following advice.
- E-liquids with a VG percentage of 40% or lower are perfect for simple devices and pod systems;
- E-liquids with a VG percentage between 40% and 70% are quite versatile. According to most vapers they deliver the best combination of flavour and vapour production. Finally, these juices can be used in most e-cigarette starter sets;
- E-liquids with a VG percentage of 70% or higher are meant for the most advanced devices. These e-liquids are quite thick. They should thus be used in tanks or e-cigarettes with a smooth juice flow.
The ratio between PG and VG also determines the most natural vaping style for a given e-liquid. High VG e-liquids are often used for Direct Lung (DL) vaping. In contrast, a high PG percentage is mostly suitable for Mouth to Lung (MTL) vaping.
E-liquids and electronic cigarettes
Once again, the ratio of PG and VG is very important. First of all, VG is thicker than PG. This means that your device must be designed for thicker juices. Second, most High VG liquids deliver the best flavour at high wattages. A variable wattage device is your best bet. Finally, you need to make sure the air-flow is wide enough for the air to keep the coil cool at high wattages.
E-liquids and nicotine
You can purchase e-liquids with or without nicotine. If you use nicotine, you can choose between Nic-Salts (short for Nicotine Salts) and Freebase Nicotine. You might also be wondering which strength you can choose.
Freebase nicotine and Nicotine Salts
Freebase means that nicotine is in its purest form compared to the other nicotine derivatives. In Nicotine Salts, by contrast, nicotine is taken from the tobacco leaf and combined with benzoic acid. This leads to a lower pH level. This is why Nic Salts have a milder throat-hit than freebase nicotine juices.
It is important to keep in mind that Nic Salts are absorbed quickly in your bloodstream. For this reason, nicotine salts are not suitable for powerful devices, such as sub-ohm kits.
E-liquids and nicotine strength
Nicotine strength is expressed in milligrams per millilitre (mg/ml). As a rule of thumb, you can refer to the following table.
Nicotine strength | Simple device user | Advanced device user (e.g., sub-ohm) |
3mg/ml and 4mg/ml | Occasional smokers for Mouth-to-Lung vaping | Light smokers for Direct-Lung vaping |
6mg/ml and 9mg/ml | Light smokers for Mouth-to-Lung vaping | Heavy smokers for Direct-Lung vaping |
10mg/ml Nic Salts, 12mg/ml and 14mg/ml | Heavy smokers for Mouth-to-Lung vaping | Very heavy smokers for Direct-Lung vaping |
18mg/ml and 20mg/ml Nic Salts | Very heavy smokers for Mouth-to-Lung vaping | – |
E-liquids and safety
In Europe all e-liquids are sold in 10ml bottles, with the exception of shortfills which do not contain nicotine. Each bottle features a child-proof cap. The packaging always includes a leaflet, which you should read before using the e-liquid in your electronic cigarette. Finally, all e-liquids with nicotine must be tested by a recognized lab. A new flavour undergoes a strict authorization procedure before it is allowed for sale.
Safety Warning
E-liquids may contain nicotine, which is a highly addictive substance. This warning applies to all e-liquids that contain nicotine at the moment of purchase. It also applies if nicotine is added by the end user.
